My name is Mary Alice Young. When you read this morning's paper, you may come across an article about the unusual day I had last week. Normally, there is never anything newsworthy about my life. But that all changed last Thursday.

come across somebody/something: to meet, find, or discover someone or something by chance 无意中遇到、偶然遇到剧中用了''come across'',表示“看报纸时无意中翻到、看到”。例:I came across an old diary in her desk.(我在她抽屉里,无意中发现了一本旧年的日记。) As I was walking through the town, I came across a group of street performers.(我路过这个镇时,看到一些街头艺人。)I've never come across anyone quite like her before.(我以前从没遇到过像她这样的人。) We've come across a few problems that need resolving.(我们遇到一些需要去解决的问题。)

The journey normally takes about two hours.(通常,去那里要花大约两小时。)
例:She said she was feeling fine, but in truth she was very ill.(她说自己没事,实际上却病得很厉害。) My body was discovered by my neighbor, Mrs. Martha Huber, who had been startled by a strange popping sound.

pop: v. to suddenly break open or come away from something often with a short, loud noise例:We heard the sound of corks popping as the celebration began.(庆祝会开始,我们听到“嘭嘭”开酒瓶的声音。)She popped the cork on the champagne.(她嘭的一声打开香槟。) 1. Her curiosity aroused, Mrs. Huber tried to think of a reason for dropping in on me unannounced.drop: v. to make a brief social visit (短暂的)拜访例:''drop''常与''by/in/over''连用。His sister dropped by unexpectedly.(他姐姐不请自来。)They dropped in for a chat.(他们过来聊了会儿天。)Drop over sometime!(有时间来玩!) Normally, I park behind the theater.(我通常把车停在剧场后面。) newsworthy: adj. important or interesting enough to be reported in newspapers, on the radio, or on television 有新闻价值的例:newsworthy events(有报道价值的事件) 1. Of course, everything seemed quite normal at first. I made breakfast for my family. I performed my chores. I completed my projects. I ran my errands.errand: n. a short journey in order to do something for someone, for example delivering or collecting something for them 差事例:She was always sending me on errands .(她老让我去跑腿。) He was sent out on an urgent errand.(他被派去处理一件急事了。) I seemed to spend my life running errands for people.(我好像永远都在给别人跑腿办事。) I have to run some errands for my mom this afternoon.(今天下午,我要帮我妈去办点事。) 1. In truth, I spent the day as I spent every other day。We were in the neighborhood and thought we would drop in on you.(我们家就在附近,想着我们可以来你家坐坐。)补充:drop-in: adj. able to visit without an appointment, or visiting a place without an appointment例:a drop-in restaurant(不用事先预约就可以就餐的餐馆)drop-in clients(没有事先预约就来的客户) unannounced: adv. happening without anyone expecting or knowing about it 备注:''unannounced''的同义词是''unexpectedly''。
